Protecting the legacy of Dunfermlines Guildry

Guildry Of Dunfermline

Closing in on our 600th birthday, the Guildry of Dunfermline is one of the oldest established guilds in the United Kingdom. 🥳

But, what is a Guild?

Guilds were associations of merchants or craftsmen, formed in medieval and early modern Europe. Guilds played a significant role in the economic and social life of cities and towns, and were often involved in local governance and the administration of justice. In Dunfermline, guilds were involved in the regulation of trade and the promotion of the interests of their members.

A legacy spanning generations

From the invention of the printing press, to the telescope. The guildry of Dunfermline was established long before they were invented. As you might imagine, collating this ancient literature and history is no mean feat, but we’ve done our best to ensure we collate it here for everyone to read.

The Guildhall

“The Category A listed Guildhall on the High Street was erected in 1807 by the guilds of the local merchants who were ambitious for Dunfermline to become the county town of Fife. Lack of funds forced the building to be sold, but in 1811 funds were available to add the 40-metre-high (130 ft) steeple.”
